Saudi Arabia is the largest market in the region and one of the most document driven. Goods can arrive at Jeddah or Dammam on schedule and still wait for days if the product conformity certificates are not in place, because the importer cannot clear what the system has not approved. Nostrac Shipping moves machinery, building products, industrial equipment, spare parts and consumer goods from the UK to Saudi Arabia by sea, air and project shipping, and our operations in the UAE give us a practical option to consolidate and truck across the border. The planning starts with the paperwork and the delivery city, then the mode, because the country is wide and choosing the wrong port can add a thousand kilometres of trucking.
Services on the UK to Saudi Arabia Lane
What we move, and how:
- FCL container shipping — 20ft and 40ft containers from UK ports to Jeddah Islamic Port on the Red Sea coast or King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam on the Persian Gulf coast, with inland delivery by road or, for Riyadh, by rail to the dry port. See FCL sea freight.
- LCL groupage — Consolidated sea freight for pallets and part loads, the practical option for smaller or regular orders to distributors.
- Air freight — Direct and hub routed air cargo to Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam for urgent spares, samples and high value goods. More on air freight from the UK.
- Consolidation through the UAE — Cargo can be shipped to Jebel Ali, combined with other stock in the UAE and trucked into Saudi Arabia across the land border. Useful where goods from several origins need to arrive together.
- Breakbulk and project cargo — Heavy and out of gauge equipment for construction, energy, water and industrial projects, shipped on breakbulk or Ro-Ro vessels with port handling, permits and escorted road moves planned in advance. Details on our project cargo page.
Ports, Routings and Realistic Transit Times
The port is chosen by the delivery point, not by habit:
- Jeddah — The main gateway for the western region, including Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah and Yanbu. Sea transit from the UK is typically around two to four weeks depending on the carrier's routing and any transhipment.
- Dammam — The gateway for the Eastern Province and the usual choice for Riyadh cargo, which continues by road or rail. Typically around three to five weeks from the UK, often transhipped at a regional hub.
- Riyadh — Served from Dammam by road or rail, or from Jeddah by a much longer road move. Choosing the right entry port for Riyadh is one of the simplest savings on this lane.
- Air — Usually two to five days door to door including clearance, longer if the goods need approval before release.
- Road from the UAE — One to three days from Dubai to the Eastern Province or Riyadh, depending on the time spent at the border.
Documents and Import Requirements
Saudi clearance is electronic, and the importer's registration and product approvals have to be in place before arrival:
- Commercial invoice and packing list — Detailed descriptions, commodity codes, values, weights, package counts and country of origin. Documents are submitted electronically, and every figure has to agree with the bill of lading or air waybill.
- Certificate of origin — Required for imports, issued through a UK chamber of commerce. We arrange it when you ship with us.
- Product conformity through SABER — Many regulated products need conformity certificates issued through the SABER platform, run by the Saudi standards body. The importer applies on the platform, often supported by an approved certification body. Products without the right certificates cannot be cleared, so this should be confirmed while the order is being placed.
- Food, medical and cosmetic products — These are regulated by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority and usually need product registration or approval before shipment. Labelling in Arabic is required for many consumer goods.
- UK export declaration — Filed before the goods leave the UK. Some goods may also need a UK export licence, which the exporter needs to check early.
- Wood packaging — Solid wood pallets and crates must be ISPM 15 treated and marked.
Where UK to Saudi Arabia Shipments Actually Fail
The expensive mistakes are mostly avoidable:
- Conformity certificates arranged after shipping — The container arrives and waits while the certificate is applied for, running up storage and demurrage. Start the SABER process when the order is placed.
- Wrong port for the delivery point — A box for Riyadh landed at Jeddah faces a very long road leg. Tell us the delivery city at quotation.
- Mismatched documents — The invoice, packing list and bill of lading disagree on weight or package count, and the electronic entry is queried.
- Summer heat — Container temperatures in summer are extreme. Chemicals, adhesives, batteries, food and electronics may need reefer containers or insulated packing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does sea freight take from the UK to Saudi Arabia?
Typically around two to four weeks to Jeddah and three to five weeks to Dammam, depending on the carrier's routing and any transhipment. Add time for collection in the UK, clearance in Saudi Arabia and inland delivery. Air freight is usually two to five days door to door.
Should I ship to Jeddah or Dammam?
Choose by delivery point. Jeddah serves the western region, including Makkah, Madinah and Yanbu. Dammam serves the Eastern Province and is usually the better entry for Riyadh, which is reached by road or by rail to the dry port. Landing at the wrong port can add a very long road move.
What is SABER?
SABER is the Saudi online platform through which many regulated products receive their conformity certificates before import. The importer applies, usually with support from an approved certification body. Goods that need certificates cannot be cleared without them, so the process should start when the order is placed, not when the goods arrive.
Do I need a certificate of origin for Saudi Arabia?
Yes, imports require a certificate of origin, which is issued through a UK chamber of commerce. We arrange it as part of the export documentation when you ship with us.
Can you consolidate cargo in the UAE for Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Nostrac has operations in the UAE, so cargo can be shipped into Jebel Ali, combined with goods from other origins and trucked across the border into Saudi Arabia. This works well when several suppliers need to deliver to one Saudi site together.
Do you move project cargo to Saudi Arabia?
Yes. We handle heavy and out of gauge equipment for construction, energy, water and industrial projects by breakbulk and Ro-Ro shipping, with port handling and escorted road transport. Send drawings, weights and lifting points early so the route can be surveyed and permits arranged.
What goes wrong most often on shipments to Saudi Arabia?
Missing product conformity certificates, documents that do not agree with each other, and cargo landed at the wrong port for its delivery city. In summer, heat damage to sensitive goods in standard containers is another common problem. All four are preventable with planning before shipment.
Talk to Nostrac about your requirements and we will tell you what is realistic before you commit to it.
