UK to China Logistics

Most freight between China and the United Kingdom flows west, which works in favour of UK exporters. Containers heading back to China are often easier to book and cheaper than the same box coming the other way. The harder part of exporting to China is not the sailing. It is making sure the Chinese importer can clear the goods, that labels and registrations are in place, and that the documents match exactly. Nostrac Shipping handles UK to China moves by sea, air and rail, prepares the export file in the UK, and works with the buyer's broker so the shipment clears on arrival rather than sitting in port while questions go back and forth.

Services on the UK to China Lane

What we move, and how:

  • FCL sea freight — Full 20ft and 40ft containers from Felixstowe, Southampton and London Gateway to Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Tianjin and Xiamen. See our FCL sea freight page.
  • LCL groupage — For a few pallets of machinery parts, food and drink, cosmetics or industrial supplies, shipped through consolidation services to the main Chinese ports. See our LCL sea freight page.
  • Air freight — Samples, high value goods, spare parts and urgent orders flown to Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other gateways.
  • Rail freight — Rail from European hubs to China through Kazakhstan, where Nostrac also operates. A middle option between sea and air for goods that need to arrive faster than a ship but cost less than a plane. Read more on our rail freight page.
  • Inland delivery — Onward trucking or barge from the port of arrival to factories and warehouses inland, including along the Yangtze.

Transit Times

Typical planning figures from the UK:

  • Sea freight to Shanghai, Ningbo or Shenzhen: roughly five to six weeks port to port
  • Sea freight to northern ports such as Qingdao and Tianjin: similar, sometimes a few days longer depending on the service
  • Rail from European hubs: often around three to four weeks terminal to terminal, plus time to move the cargo from the UK to the rail hub
  • Air freight: two to five days airport to airport, depending on routing
  • Allow extra time around Chinese New Year and the October national holiday, when factories, brokers and trucking slow sharply

Documents and Requirements

China is strict about paperwork matching the goods. Expect to provide:

  • Commercial invoice and packing list — Precise product descriptions, HS codes, values, weights and package counts, consistent across every document.
  • Bill of lading or air waybill — Consignee details must match the Chinese importer's customs registration exactly.
  • Certificate of origin — Issued through a UK chamber of commerce when the buyer requests it.
  • Food and drink — Overseas food manufacturers generally need to be registered with Chinese customs before their products can be imported, and prepackaged food needs Chinese language labelling. The importer should confirm the position for each product.
  • Certified products — Some electrical and other regulated products need Chinese compulsory certification before import. Check this at the quotation stage, not when the goods arrive.
  • Wood packaging — Solid wood pallets and crates must be ISPM 15 treated and marked. Untreated wood is a common reason for inspection and rejection.

Where UK to China Shipments Fail

The problems we see most often:

  • Importer cannot clear the product — The buyer is registered to import, but not for that category of goods, or the product needs a registration nobody applied for.
  • Descriptions that do not match — A generic invoice description or an HS code that does not fit the goods leads to inspection and delay.
  • Labelling missed — Food, cosmetics and consumer goods arriving without compliant Chinese labels can be held or sent back.
  • Holiday timing — Cargo arriving shortly before Chinese New Year can wait a week or more for clearance and delivery.

What UK Exporters Ship to China

The cargo we handle most on this lane, and what each needs:

  • Food and drink — Whisky, dairy, confectionery and specialist foods. Registration and labelling must be settled first, and temperature control is often needed for the long sea leg.
  • Machinery and parts — Production equipment, spares and tooling for Chinese factories. Accurate HS codes and technical descriptions avoid most customs questions.
  • Cosmetics and personal care — Regulated closely in China. The importer needs to confirm product registration or filing before anything ships.
  • Scrap and recovered materials — Subject to strict import controls in China, so many material types are restricted. We will tell you plainly if a cargo cannot go.
  • Industrial supplies and chemicals — Dangerous goods need correct classification, packing and safety data sheets before a carrier will accept the booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping take from the UK to China?

Sea freight to the main ports such as Shanghai, Ningbo and Shenzhen typically takes around five to six weeks port to port. Rail from European hubs is often three to four weeks, and air freight is usually two to five days.

Which Chinese ports do you ship to?

Mainly Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Tianjin and Xiamen, with onward delivery inland by truck, rail or barge.

Is shipping from the UK to China cheaper than shipping from China to the UK?

Often yes. Most container traffic between Asia and Europe runs westbound, so eastbound space back to China is usually easier to secure. Rates change with the market, so we quote each shipment on current prices.

Who clears the goods in China?

The Chinese importer, through their customs broker. We send complete, consistent documents early and coordinate with the broker so questions are answered before the goods arrive.

Can you ship food and drink from the UK to China?

Yes, provided the manufacturer and products meet Chinese registration and labelling requirements. The importer should confirm these before the order ships. We can handle ambient and temperature controlled shipments.

Is rail a good option from the UK to China?

It can be, for goods that need to arrive faster than sea freight but where air freight is too expensive. Cargo travels from the UK to a European rail hub and then by train through Kazakhstan to China.
