Renewable energy projects are built to a construction programme, and the components arrive in an order that programme dictates. Miss the sequence and a crane sits idle at several thousand pounds a day, or a delivery arrives at a site that has nowhere to put it. Nostrac Shipping moves wind, solar and energy storage components for developers, EPC contractors and equipment suppliers, from a few hundred pallets of solar modules through to blades and tower sections that need a route survey and an escorted road move. The awkward part is rarely the sea leg. It is the last few miles, the crane window, the laydown space and the sequence, and that is where we do most of our planning.

Components and How They Move

Each component family has its own constraint:

  • Blades — Long, light for their size and easily damaged. They move on specialist trailers with steerable rears or blade lifters on the road leg, and by breakbulk or specialist vessel at sea. The road route decides feasibility long before the shipping does, so the survey comes first.
  • Tower sections — Heavy, large diameter and awkward to nest. They need suitable quay handling, adequate laydown space and a crane capable of the section weight at the required radius, confirmed against the actual lift plan rather than the crane's headline capacity.
  • Nacelles, hubs and drivetrain assemblies — Concentrated weight in a single package, usually breakbulk or heavy lift with lifting points specified by the manufacturer. Lifting gear and slinging arrangements are agreed with the supplier, not improvised at the quay.
  • Transformers and switchgear — High value, sensitive to shock and often fitted with impact recorders. Route selection favours smooth surfaces and few transfers, and we plan for the recorder being read on arrival because a triggered device becomes a warranty argument.
  • Solar modules and mounting systems — High volume container cargo where the risk is micro cracking from poor handling and stacking. Loading pattern, stacking limits and pallet condition matter more than transit time.
  • Inverters, cabling and balance of plant — Standard container and pallet freight, but easy to under plan. These items hold up commissioning as effectively as any major component if they land late.
  • Battery energy storage containers — Moved as units with their cells inside, which brings dangerous goods rules into play. That means declared lithium content, correct classification and documentation, and a carrier that accepts the cargo. We arrange this through qualified dangerous goods support rather than approximating it.

Route Survey and Site Access

For anything oversized, the survey is the deliverable that matters most:

  • Physical route check — Roundabouts, bridges, gradients, overhead lines, verges and street furniture along the whole route from port to site, checked against the actual vehicle and load dimensions rather than a map.
  • Permissions and escorts — Abnormal load movements need the correct notifications and, depending on the dimensions, escorting and timing restrictions. We build the lead time for that into the plan instead of discovering it in the final week.
  • Site entrance and internal haul roads — The entrance radius, the internal road surface and the turning space at the laydown area. Sites under construction change week to week, so the check needs to be current, not from the tender pack.
  • Laydown and storage — Where the components sit between arrival and installation, how they are supported, and whether the site can hold a full vessel discharge or whether stock needs to stage at the port.
  • Crane and lift window — The lift plan drives the delivery time, not the other way round. We build the transport schedule around the crane availability and confirm the sequence with the installation contractor.

Keeping to the Construction Programme

How we manage a component programme rather than a series of bookings:

  • Sequenced delivery plan — One schedule covering every component family against the installation order, so nothing critical waits behind something that is not needed for weeks.
  • Port staging — Using a port or nearby yard as a buffer so the site receives what it can handle, when it can handle it, rather than everything at once.
  • Single point of coordination — One team dealing with the supplier, the vessel, the road contractors and the site, which removes the gaps where nobody owns the next step.
  • Condition evidence — Photographic records at loading, at transfer and at delivery. On high value components this is what settles a damage question quickly instead of over months.
  • Contingency — A named alternative for the tight parts of the plan, whether that is a second sailing option, a different port of discharge or an alternative road route. Renewable programmes rarely have slack, so the fallback needs to exist before it is needed.

Can you move wind turbine blades and tower sections?

Yes, through specialist road equipment and breakbulk or heavy lift sea carriage. The decisive step is the route survey. We check the road route from the discharge port to the site against the real vehicle and load envelope, confirm the abnormal load notifications and any escort requirement, and check the site entrance and internal haul roads. If a route will not work we say so early, because the answer is sometimes a different port of discharge rather than a different vehicle.

How early do you need to start planning a project delivery?

As soon as the installation programme exists in draft, and certainly before the equipment purchase orders are placed. Route surveys, abnormal load arrangements, vessel space for oversized pieces and crane windows all have lead times, and specialist trailers are a limited fleet. Early involvement also lets us tell you whether a component split or a different port materially reduces the cost.

Do you handle battery energy storage systems?

Yes, with the dangerous goods side handled properly. Lithium cells and complete storage containers are regulated cargo, so the classification, packing, marking and documentation have to be right and the carrier has to accept the shipment. We arrange this with qualified dangerous goods support and confirm carrier acceptance before booking, because a refused container at the terminal is an expensive way to learn the rules.

Can you deliver directly to a site under construction?

Usually, provided the site can receive the load. We check the entrance geometry, ground conditions, internal roads, laydown space and offloading arrangements before the vehicle is dispatched, and we work to the crane and installation window. Where the site is not ready, staging at a port or nearby yard and calling components forward is normally cheaper than a vehicle standing on site.

What documentation do renewable components need?

Commercial invoice and packing list with dimensions and weights per piece, the transport document, origin evidence where preference is claimed, the manufacturer's lifting and handling instructions, and dangerous goods documentation for anything containing lithium cells. For oversized pieces we also need certified dimensions and lifting point details, because those drive the equipment selection and the permissions.

Do you provide cargo insurance for high value components?

We arrange marine cargo cover on request and we will talk you through what a policy needs to reflect for this kind of cargo, including the value, the transhipment points and the road legs. For transformers and drivetrain components we also recommend impact recorders and photographic condition records at every handover, because they are what makes a claim straightforward if one is ever needed.

Can you consolidate solar modules and balance of plant from several suppliers?

Yes. Multi supplier consolidation is common on solar projects, where modules, mounting systems, inverters and cabling come from different factories and often different countries. We collect, consolidate and ship to a sequence that matches the installation plan, which reduces the number of part deliveries arriving at site out of order.

Which ports do you use for renewable project cargo into the UK?

It depends on the piece sizes, the quay handling and laydown available, and above all the road route to site. The nearest port is not automatically the right one: a slightly longer sea leg into a port with better handling and a workable road route often lands cheaper and with less risk than a short sea leg followed by a difficult abnormal load move. We compare the realistic options as part of the plan.
