Materials and Equipment We Move
- Steel and rebar — Sections, plate, coil, mesh and reinforcement bar. Dense, often over-length, and usually the first material where a standard container stops being the right answer.
- Cement, aggregates and dry bulk — Bagged and bulk product where payload limits and moisture protection drive the packing decision.
- Cladding, facade and glazing — High value, easily damaged and frequently over-height in its transport frames. Crate design and securing matter more than the freight rate.
- Timber and engineered wood — Sawn timber, panel products and engineered components, with due diligence obligations on legality of supply for imports.
- Prefabricated and modular units — Bathroom pods, wall panels, plant rooms and volumetric modules. Almost always out of gauge and needing route planning rather than only a booking.
- Formwork, scaffolding and falsework — Often moving in and out of a country for a single project, which is where temporary admission can remove duty entirely.
- Construction plant and machinery — Excavators, cranes, generators and attachments, whether on flat rack, RoRo or breakbulk depending on dimensions and self-propulsion.
Container, Flat Rack or Breakbulk
Choosing the equipment badly is the most common source of avoidable cost on construction freight:
- Standard container — Suitable for palletised and bagged materials. With dense cargo such as steel or tile, a 20ft box reaches its weight limit long before it is full, so paying for a 40ft to gain volume you cannot use is a common mistake.
- Flat rack — For cargo that exceeds container width or height, or that has to be loaded by crane from above. Lashing and securing become part of the specification, not an afterthought.
- Open top — For over-height cargo that still fits within container width and can be lifted in vertically.
- Breakbulk and multipurpose vessels — For long steel sections, structural assemblies and heavy single pieces where containerisation is impossible or uneconomic. Requires more lead time and a clear lifting plan.
- RoRo — For wheeled and tracked plant that can be driven or towed on and off, often faster and less complex than lifting the same machine.
Weight, Securing and Compliance
- Verified gross mass — The shipper must declare a verified gross mass for every packed container before loading. Without it the box does not go on the vessel, and dense construction cargo makes accurate weighing essential rather than routine.
- Road weight limits — A container that is legal at sea can be illegal on the road. UK articulated combinations are limited by gross vehicle weight, and axle loading limits can bite before that ceiling is reached.
- Cargo securing — Steel and heavy plant on flat racks need lashing calculated for the movement, not applied by habit. Poorly secured cargo shifts, damages adjacent units and generates claims that are rarely paid.
- Abnormal load permits — Once a load exceeds dimension or weight thresholds, notification and permits are needed for the road leg, and each authority has its own lead time. This routinely determines the delivery date more than the vessel schedule.
- Product compliance — Construction products placed on the UK market carry marking and declaration of performance obligations. Materials that arrive without the right documentation cannot be installed even though they have physically been delivered.
Delivering onto a Live Site
Urban construction sites have almost no storage and very little tolerance for early arrivals:
- Booked delivery windows — Most managed sites operate timed slots. Missing a window can mean returning the following day, so the vehicle has to be planned around the slot rather than the other way round.
- Access survey — Vehicle size, swept path, overhead clearance, gradient and hardstanding all constrain what can physically reach the unloading point. Checking this before booking is far cheaper than discovering it on the day.
- Offloading responsibility — Who provides the crane, forklift or telehandler, and who is qualified to sling the load, needs to be settled in writing before the vehicle is dispatched.
- Buffer storage and consolidation — Holding material near the site and releasing it in sequence is usually cheaper than paying for storage on the critical path, and it protects the programme when a vessel is late.
- Urban compliance schemes — Contractors in London and other cities commonly require accredited operators and specific vehicle safety standards. This affects which hauliers can be used and should be established at tender, not at delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should steel move in containers or as breakbulk?
It depends on length and weight. Bar, mesh and short sections in manageable bundles container well, and containers give better protection and simpler handling. Long sections, structural assemblies and single heavy pieces are usually better on flat rack or on a multipurpose vessel. We compare the total landed cost including securing, port handling and the inland leg, because the cheapest ocean rate frequently loses on the road.
What is verified gross mass and who is responsible for it?
Verified gross mass is the total weight of the cargo plus the container, declared by the shipper before loading under international safety rules. The shipper carries the obligation, and a container without a VGM declaration will not be loaded. For dense construction cargo it needs to be measured rather than estimated, because an estimate that is wrong can also make the subsequent road movement illegal.
Can you deliver directly to a construction site?
Yes, provided the access will take the vehicle and offloading is arranged. We survey access, work to the site's booked delivery windows and confirm who is providing lifting equipment. Where site access or the programme will not allow direct delivery, we hold material nearby and release it in sequence.
How do you handle over-length or over-height loads?
By planning the road leg before the sea leg. Once dimensions are confirmed we assess the route for clearances and weight restrictions, arrange the notifications and permits the load requires, and specify the trailer configuration. Permits carry their own lead time, so this work starts as soon as dimensions are fixed rather than after the vessel arrives.
Do imported construction materials need specific documentation to be used on a UK project?
Yes. Construction products placed on the UK market carry marking and declaration of performance obligations, and timber imports carry due diligence requirements on legality of supply. Yes. Buffer storage is one of the most effective tools on a construction supply chain. It lets you order in economic quantities, absorbs vessel delay without stopping the site, and releases material in the order the trades need it. We arrange warehousing and phased release as part of the freight.
Do you move construction plant and machinery?
Yes. Depending on the machine we use flat rack, breakbulk or RoRo. Self-propelled plant is often cheapest on RoRo, while tracked or dismantled machines may need lifting. Movements in and out of a country for a single project can sometimes use temporary admission to avoid paying duty on equipment that is returning.
